Flashback Friday: Summer Vacation
With the July 4th holiday this weekend, it seemed only fitting that this flashback Friday was dedicated to summer vacation. Not the summer vacation where you take a week off of work and enjoy, but back to your summer vacations during the school year, where you had 2 months off from your typical routine.
The excitement in the weeks leading up to it was palpable, even the teachers seemed anxious for it to arrive. Finally, the days would no longer be filled with routine; instead, anything we wanted to do was on our time. You could have sleepovers in the middle of the week since there were no such things as school nights anymore. You could sleep in as late as you want. You could visit the zoo or the mall during the week. Perhaps the best part, no more school lunches!
As the days flew past, sometimes you caught yourself thinking this is so boring. I need to be doing something, I've done nothing for 5 days straight. One summer I got so bored, that I read an entire set of children's encyclopedias! At least when school was in, you had someplace to go every day and friends to socialize with. Playing with your sisters in the kiddie pool outside got old after about 10 minutes because someone ultimately filled it with grass. Now that you were home all day, chores started to materialize more frequently. The excuse of homework was off the table when it came to helping with the dishes.
What I wouldn't do to have one more summer vacation similar to that. I'd happily do the chores, sit down and do nothing for 5 days straight, and I may even read a whole set of encyclopedias (probably not); if I could just have one more summer vacation. Not having it felt like being dropped into a tub of ice water. I guess you'll never appreciate the simple pleasures until they are rudely taken from you by adult responsibility.
Happy 4th of July!
Jackie & Vinnie
