Eating Healthy May Kill Me

I will be the first to admit it, I hate to work out. I don't like to sweat and the fact that the scale doesn't register any weight loss even though I swear I worked off at least 5 pounds at the gym. Voluntarily giving up sweets is pure torture to me. I like instant gratification, changing my diet and increasing the amount of time I spend in the gym, voluntarily sweating, does not give you instant results. It does, as I often have to remind myself, have long-term benefits. It helps you become healthier, it allows you to enjoy a dessert or three without feeling terribly guilty, and you like the way you feel about yourself. So with that in mind, this week Vinnie and I made the resolve to start eating healthier and work out smarter.

This morning, instead of sitting down and watching Saturday morning cartoons with a large bowl of cereal in my lap, I opted to have a bowl of vanilla Greek yogurt topped with pumpkin flax-seed granola from Wegmans. I even followed the serving size by using a measuring cup to make sure I had just enough. From the few things I've read about Greek yogurt and granola, it is supposed to increase your protein intake and fill you up so you aren't looking for a morning snack soon after you finish. However, my stomach apparently didn't get that memo, and I was already dreaming about lunch an hour later. I have a feeling this is going to be a work in progress. I think I'm going to add fruit as well for a little bit of natural sugars to hold me over.

Another tool that we are using to keep ourselves on track with eating healthier is tracking our meals on our FitBit app. I know a similar tool is offered on the MyFitnessPal App and the Samsung Galaxy S5 has it's own tool as well. I actually prefer the MyFitnessPal meal tracker but since I use the FitBit app to look at other data that it accumulates, it's easier to log it there. By keeping track of each meal, it keeps us honest to what we are actually eating and we can see where we need to either add or subtract calories. It does take some time to add each meal item to the planner but it does save previous selections so you can easily select it when you eat it again.

What are some useful ways you have kept on track with eating healthier and getting more active?

Happy Weekend!
